Voices of Burma
is a non-profit organization/ OPIRG working group that is working to
help support Burmese migrants and refugees who have fled persecution
within Burma, to Thailand. The group displays art done by the Karen refugees,
many of whom are children. All donations help to support their schools,
which receive no funding within Thailand, and to support the artists
and their families.
Voices of Burma aims to raise awareness about the refugees and provide financial aid with any donations that we receive, as well as
raise awareness about the current situation in Burma. The group participates in many
events within the community and at Trent in order to raise awareness
for the Burmese people, and are always looking for new members to join the group.
In 2009-2010, Voices of Burma had an art exhibit at Artspace and also an art sale at Haaselton's, they were apart of the Peterborough Film Festival and showed a movie speaking about the current situation in Burma.
In 2007-08, Voices of Burma organized the following events: art exhibit
at Bata Library, art exhibit at Showplace, Beyond Rangoon Film Screening, panel
discussion, Total Denial Film Screening, petition campaign, community walk and
candlelight vigil, art exhibit at Ani Difranco concert, and an art exhibit at
Traveling Community Film Festival.
Currently, seeking members to continue with the working group during the 2010-2011 school year. Please email us if you're interested!
