  • The Free Market  ( 3 items )

The primary goal of the Free Market Collective is to provide a space for the redistribution of donated clothing and other items to members of the Trent and Peterborough communities. At the Free Market "store" people can come in and take as much as they want for free, without donating anything. This is not a bartering or trading system, but rather a space where items that are no longer needed by one person can be redistributed to those who need (or want) them.

The Free Market is an initiative begun by a small group of Trent students in 2005, who wanted to promote the values of reusing and recycling over discarding and "re-consuming". By opening the Free Market 'store', they were able to serve the environmental purpose of reducing waste materials through reuse, and the social justice purpose of providing free goods to those who need them. The name name plays off the neo-liberal concept of free-market.

For the past few years, The Free Market, opporated in the basement of  Sadleir House, 751 George St N. Open several days a week and run by student and community volunteers, the Free Market is always stocked, with donations coming in daily. In addition to keeping the space open, The Free Market organizes numerous additional events each year.

The Free Market receives only $100 per year from OPIRG-Peterborough as a working group. Even faced with this economic barrier, The Free Market remains committed to providing items free of charge. The Free Market is a wildly successful initiative that encourages reuse and aims to reduce stigma around using other people’s used items. Students and community members have shown great interest in The Free Market, exemplified by their abundant donations and their enthusiastic reuse of the goods available.

All members of the Trent and Peterborough communities are welcome and invited to come and take items free of charge.

    Mission Statement

We are part of a global movement of over one million people from over 150 countries who are determined to stop the abuse of human rights.

We demand freedom for all prisoners of conscience – people imprisoned for their beliefs, origins, colour, gender or language, provided that they have not used or advocated violence.

We demand fair trials within a reasonable time for all political prisoners.

We demand that the death penalty be abolished, and that the torture and ill treatment of all prisoners be stopped.

We demand an end to all political killings and 'disappearances'.

We call on both governments and armed opposition groups to respect human rights.

Amnesty International is free from outside influence. It is not controlled by any government, religion, or any other organization. It does not take sides in political conflicts. The movement is funded by its members and by donations from the public. AI does not ask for nor does it accept any money from any government.

Whenever human rights violations that fall within AI's mandate take place, we demand their end – without exception.
